Leaders Never Let Up On Engagement

Engagement matters.

Gallup quantified this issue by studying employee engagement for 40-plus years. Some of their recent findings include:

  • 34% of employees report active engagement in their jobs.
  • 50% of employees report a lack of engagement in their jobs.
  • 16% of employees report active disengagement.
  • In world-class organizations, the ratio of engaged employees to actively disengaged employees is about 10 to 1.
  • In average organizations, the ratio of engaged employees to actively disengaged employees is about 2 to 1.

This article summarizes some recent changes in employee engagement over the last ten years.

Gallup has two bits of advice.

  1. Focus on the basics.
  2. Manage your managers.

Sound interesting? If so, I highly recommend you read the article. In it, you’ll recognize both bits of advice are themes we’ve explored previously in this blog. For example, the concept of “focusing on the basics” is even more critical in times of change, and I’m glad Gallup highlighted it.

When comparing engagement in the top one-fourth of companies against the bottom fourth, here is what Gallup found:

  • Absenteeism is 37% lower.
  • Safety incidents are 49% lower.
  • Quality defects are 60% lower.
  • Productivity is 18% higher.
  • Profitability is 16% higher.

Therefore, servant leadership improves lives and makes our world a better place. I’ve preached about this concept for years. And yet, even the most touchy-feely among us, myself included, need more.

We need to get things done.

Thus, leaders and companies who value employee engagement need to push high standards of excellence and achievement

Servant leadership, practiced right, gets the job done.
